2021 ACH Transaction Volume
In 2021 the ACH network processed over 29 billion transactions, up almost 10% from 2020. Dollar volume totaled $72.6 trillion, a 17% increase.
In the same time period Visa, the world’s largest card network, processed 165 billion transactions last year worth almost $10.5 trillion.
Much of the volume increase can be attributed to P2P payments with Zelle and Venmo being the major players. Both B2B payments and Healthcare were up close to 20% versus 2020.
Same-day ACH payments enjoyed an almost 75% increase in adoption versus 2020, with debits claiming 55% of the transactions and 40+% of the dollar value..
Same-day ACH is expected to acquire even more momentum in March when a new rule extending the per-payment cap to $1 million will take effect, a 10-fold increase from the current limit. The cap raise move was prompted by requests from banks and is one NACHA expects will continue to ramp up payment volume.
